Teaching Grounded in Research

The Building Materials and Construction research laboratory is an integral part of ESITC-Caen. Researchers from the school’s faculty take advantage of this environment to stimulate students and expose them to scientific research methods (rigor, perseverance, independence, and critical and analytical thinking).

Teaching through research is one facet of the diversity of teaching methods at ESITC Caen.

At the same time, teaching research is a way to promote activities in Research & Development of products, building materials and techniques in line with sustainable development.  These activities provide an opportunity to discover key careers with major implications for the future of civil engineering.

Examples of Current Projects:

Valuation of Shells as Green Building Materials
The objective is to recycle discarded seashells by using them alongside or in place of aggregates, a non-renewable resource.
Example project: Building artificial reefs with concrete and shells.

Valuation of Flax as a Green Building Material
Today, nearly all flax is used in the textile industry.  The goal of this research is to find new uses for this natural fibre in the green construction sector.
Example project: Using flax in the renovation of old buildings.

Valuation of Sediments Recovered from Seaport Dredging for Highway Construction
